Catherine, Princess of Wales and Prince William share sweet public display of affection during state visit

Catherine, Princess of Wales and her husband Prince William have put on a rare and subtle public display of affection at the start of South Korea’s state visit to the UK.

On Tuesday, the couple visited a display of Korean items from the royal collection at Buckingham Palace, followed by a private lunch hosted by King Charles to welcome President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, First Lady Kim Keon Hee.

As they made their way out of the Palace’s Picture Gallery, William gently placed his hand on his wife’s back, prompting Kate to turn around, pause, smile at him, and reciprocate by putting her arm around him.

The couple stayed like this for a few moments before William gave Kate a sweet pat on the back.

The pair then dropped their arms and kept walking.

Kate’s surprise move leaves viewers ‘in shock’

When the footage appeared on X (formerly Twitter), fans went wild.

“And to think they have been together for 20 years,” one person wrote.

“See why I love British romance?” wrote another.

“It’s the chemistry, the lustful restraint, the romantic tension.”

“This is just the sweetest video ever,” remarked another.

Royal PDA rules

Royal PDA’s (public displays of affection) of this type are not especially common, although there are no hard-and-fast rules on the subject.

“Senior members of the royal family would likely not be told how to interact or when they can or can not show PDA and would be trusted to use their better judgement as to when it’s appropriate,” royal etiquette expert Myka Meier told People after a previous PDA moment between the pair several years ago.

“The royals often adjust PDA to mirror the formality of the event they are attending.

“At a sombre or more formal event, we are less likely to see PDA than at a casual event where it would be deemed more fitting.”

In recent weeks and months, Kate and William have more frequently shown affection towards each other in public.

At an event celebrating King Charles’ coronation earlier this year in Scotland, Kate was spotted with her hand on William’s bottom as she leaned over to talk to him.

At the BAFTAs in London in February, a similar gesture was caught on camera, this time with Kate patting her husband on the backside.

At sporting events the pair tend to let their guard down even further, with the couple spotted kissing on the pitch at Prince William’s Royal Charity Polo Day in July.

Despite the discreet display of affection during the South Korea state visit, proceedings have otherwise been formal.

Kate continued a state visit tradition by wearing a colour associated with the relevant country’s flag.

South Korea’s flag is red, blue and white.

For the first part of the day, she wore a bold red wool bespoke cape by Catherine Walker & Co, a matching red hat by Jane Taylor and red shoes.

In a nod to the blue element of the South Korean flag, the outfit was accessorised with sapphire and diamond drop earrings, which once belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

William and Kate played a key role in welcoming their South Korean guests, meeting them at their hotel in London before travelling with them to Horse Guards Parade, where they joined Charles and Camilla for an official welcome.

A carriage procession then took the entourage along The Mall to Buckingham Palace.

Kate then tweaked her outfit slightly, removing the hat and loosening her hair, before visiting the Picture Gallery, where they looked at Korean items – and where the Prince and Princess of Wales’ sweet PDA took place.
