Catherine, Princess of Wales spills on who is the ‘strict’ parent

Catherine, Princess of Wales has given royal fans insight into the Prince and Princess of Wales’ joint parenting style.

The royal mother, 41, revealed whether she is “strict” with her children while dishing on husband Prince William’s “very good” talent with the kids.

The couple are parents to Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five.

Attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2023, Princess Kate spoke with a 93-year-old guest about parenting.

Footage only recently shared by Sky News showed the elderly woman cracking jokes as Kate spoke of her family.

“I’m terrible, I’m terrible at jokes,” Kate was heard saying in the conversation.

Kate told the woman that William is “very good” at humour and would be sharing a joke “if he was here”.

Responding, the woman guessed that Kate was “the strict one” of the parents.

“I’m definitely not strict! How can you tell that? Surely not!” she responded.

Along with usual parenting, the Prince and Princess of Wales have also had to determine the best way to raise their children, being in the public eye and with the ‘heir’ and ‘spare’ labels.

It comes after William’s younger brother Prince Harry expressed his concern for future “spares” in the family.

“Though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare,” Harry told The Telegraph.

“And that hurts, that worries me.”

According to royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, William and Kare have it “all worked out”, having devised parenting strategies.

“George, Charlotte and Louis are enjoying a childhood Harry and William didn’t get to enjoy, and I think that is why William and Kate are channeling everything they can into raising their children with an understanding of who they are as royals but as ordinary children too,” Nicholl said on the Dynasty podcast.

“No one wants the next generation to suffer as Harry has suffered… it’s not a pretty picture.

“I think when you look to the Wales and how they are raising their children, away from the spotlight, in pretty ordinary schools, in a regular cottage on the grounds of Windsor, having bucket and spade holidays…

“It does open up the question of the next spare, of Princess Charlotte,” she continued.

“I’m sure William and Kate have got that all worked out.

“Reading Spare, if they do, I think at points it will be deeply uncomfortable for them.”

While firstborn Prince George is second in line for the throne, Charlotte is in line for a special title of her own.

The young princess will succeed Princess Anne as the next “Princess Royal”.

It is a royal tradition that the title is bestowed on the eldest daughter of the monarch, mirroring the French royal “Madame Royale”, which was introduced in 1642.

If Anne dies before King Charles, the title will lay dormant until William ascends to the throne – as Charles had no daughters.
