It is understood the King will now step back from royal duties to begin his cancer treatment.
“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Monday local time.
“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”

William and wife Catherine, Princess of Wales are living in London with their family and are active senior members of the royal family.
Meanwhile, Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex stepped back from the royal family in 2020 and moved to California in the US.
Since the departure, the Sussexes have had a strained relationship with the rest of the royal family.
It is believed that Harry will be making the trip back to the UK to visit his sick father in the coming days, according to The Press Association.

“The duke did speak with his father about his diagnosis. He will be travelling to the UK to see His Majesty in the coming days,” a source close to Harry said.
His last public appearance with his father was at Charles’ coronation in May 2023.
He travelled solo with Meghan and their two young children Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2, remaining at home in the US.
In terms of which cancer Charles has been diagnosed with, it remains unknown, but a royal source says it is not prostate.
Buckingham Palace said in the statement the King remained “wholly positive about his treatment” and he looked forward to returning to his public duties as soon as possible.
The statement added the King chose to reveal his diagnosis to prevent speculation around the world about his health.

Charles, 75, who last month spent three nights in hospital after undergoing a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate, was seen smiling and waving to crowds as he left the London Clinic accompanied by his wife Queen Camilla about a week ago.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement at the time that Charles, who was visited in hospital by Camilla each day of his stay, wanted to thank his medical team and all those who had supported his hospital visit.
