Queen Mary has turned 52, and to mark the occasion she has shared a heartwarming picture to the Danish royal family’s official Instagram account.
But there was one glaring omission from the photo — her husband, King Frederik, was nowhere in sight.

Instead, the Australian-born royal chose to share a picture of herself with her father, John Donaldson, taken by her son Prince Vincent.
The image was snapped during Mary’s visit to Australia in December.
“Her Majesty The Queen has a birthday and turns 52 today,” the image was captioned.

King Frederik praises ‘happy base’ of marriage to Queen Mary amid affair rumours
“On this occasion, the Queen has chosen an image of a special moment with her father from her recent trip to Australia in December.
“His Royal Highness Prince Vincent is the photographer behind it.”
It was a poignant choice of photograph, as Mary’s father was not able to fly to Denmark for the coronation on January 14 due to his age and fragile health.

Princess Mary became Queen, and Crown Prince Frederik became King, after Frederik’s 83-year-old mother Margrethe announced her decision to abdicate during an address on December 31.
Many followers commented on how relaxed Mary looked in her birthday photo.
Rather than posing in formal attire, she is pictured looking casual in a black V-neck top, with black sunglasses perched on her head and minimal makeup, her hair tied into a simple plait.
Her father, who is 82, looks directly at the camera as Mary puts her arm around him.
Fans loved the picture, which clearly shows the affection between father and daughter.
“Happy birthday. Lovely photo,” one follower wrote.
“Beautiful photo! Queen Mary looks so relaxed with her precious Dad,” noted another.
“Happy birthday, here’s to many more trips around the sun! 🎉”
“Congratulations to Mary on her first birthday as Queen,” wrote a third.
“So touching and lovely to see her with her dad #familyfirst.”
The relaxed nature of the picture was in contrast to some of the more tension-filled pictures of Mary around the time unsubstantiated claims emerged that Frederik was having an affair.

Before Margrethe’s abdication, Spanish magazine Lecturas claimed that Frederik was involved with a Mexican socialite, Genoveva Casanova.
Casanova furiously denied the claims and the royal family declined to comment, but not long after, Margrethe announced her abdication.
Some Danish royal family observers speculated that Margrethe had done so in an attempt to solidify Frederik and Mary’s marriage.
Scotching the rumours, Frederik praised the “happy base” of his marriage in a royal biography called The King’s World, which was released days after he and Mary acceded to the throne.
“I love marriage, my wife, our children and the whole happy base that arises for the people who manage to stay together and persevere,” Fredrik said in the biography, written in collaboration with Jens Anderson.

And for most of Queen Mary’s Instagram followers, rumours of trouble in the marriage was old news, with no mention of it in the comments.
Most were happy to see a down-to-earth and smiling Mary back home with her Australian family.
“Even without makeup, she is sooooooo beautiful 😍😍🔥🔥,” one fan noted.
“Family is everything and you are so lucky to still have your Dad,” wrote another.
“Many happy returns 🥳🥳🥳,” added a third.
“To me the photo depicts a really proud father with his loving daughter.
“Beautiful indeed … thanks for sharing this intimate family time.”
