Princess Mary’s nephew Count Nikolai of Monpezat has given an insight into his life in Sydney, where he is studying along with his girlfriend Benedikte Thoustrup.
Nikolai is the son of Prince Joachim, brother to Mary’s husband Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.
The young royal and his girlfriend are studying for a semester at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Ultimo.

The pair have settled in Surry Hills and have begun exploring Sydney life, as Nikolai’s official Instagram account shows.
The 24-year-old was demoted from a Prince to a Count by his grandmother, Queen Margrethe, earlier this year, along with his siblings Felix, Henrik, and Athena, after the Danish monarch decided to “streamline” the royal family.
But the Count told The Daily Telegraph that despite his royal upbringing he was “just a bloke, Nikolai.”

Princess Mary family member makes ‘super exciting’ Aussie announcement
“I try and go around very incognito at home, you’d often find me in a cap, wearing a hoodie, my sunnies, I try to go about in an incognito way,” he said.
“Of course I know all of my courtesies and formalities, I have been taught them since I was very young, but it is not like we practice it at home in private – then it is a low-key regular family.”
Nikolai revealed that Princess Mary had given him some tips on where to go and what to see during his time in her home country.
“She gave me a long list, an itinerary of what to do and what not to do,” he said.
“Basic ‘survival skills’, I would say – clap your boots before putting them on, stuff like that, flush the toilet before you use it. I do not (want a snake or spider).”

So far, Nikolai said he had been enjoying the scenery, good weather and friendly people.
“I like that it is laid back here, people are just so friendly, so nice, talkative, I really enjoy that,” he said.
He celebrated his 24th birthday in Byron Bay, and has also enjoyed swimming, surfing, and checking out the local cafes and restaurants.

Two of Nikolai’s nearest and dearest have spent time in Australia.
His father, Joachim, spent time working on a sheep farm in Wagga Wagga in the 1980s as part of a post-university gap year.
And his girlfriend Benedikte has been to Australia as an exchange student before, spending time in Alice Springs and Armidale in NSW.

Then, of course, there is the Aussie connection through Princess Mary.
“I would say she has adopted Denmark and the Danish way a lot but you can tell that she loves Australia,” Nikolai said.
“I don’t want to put words into her mouth but she goes back every so often and I think she just enjoys every bit of it.
“The connection I can feel from my cousins, who are raised Danish but definitely have that Aussie connection too.”
Whilst Nikolai is studying a master’s in business economics, his modelling career is also taking off, with his tall, dark-haired good looks earning him spots on the runway at Dior and Burberry.

He’s also appeared on the cover of Numero magazine recently, talking about his impending visit to Australia.
“It is an adventure I am stoked to begin and super-excited to live abroad again,” he said.
“The choice fell on Australia because it is very foreign for a Dane like me.
“I have never been that far away and I believe seeing that corner of the world takes more than two weeks holiday, so I want to try and move there.”
